A 16-year-old girl was shot and killed in an Aurora home invasion Tuesday morning and police are searching for two men involved.
Two men entered the apartment unit, fought with the family inside and fired multiple gunshots, Capt. Marc Paolino with the Aurora Police Department said during a news briefing.
Paolino said investigators believe there was a physical struggle between the suspects and the apartment residents before the shooting, but police are unsure if the two men forced their way inside or were brought into the apartment.
Aurora officers responded to reports of the home invasion and shooting in the 10600 block of East Jewell Avenue around 6:15 a.m. Tuesday, according to a news release from the police department.
The block is home to the Willowick Apartments, a rental car facility, a used car dealer and a car wash. It’s just east of South Havana Street and south of East Colorado Avenue.
When officers arrived, they found a 16-year-old girl with a gunshot wound inside the apartment, police said.
Officers performed life-saving measures on the girl until paramedics arrived at the scene to rush her to the hospital, where she later died, police said.
The girl lived in the apartment that was broken into with her family, but no one else was injured, Aurora police spokesperson Joe Moylan said. Police aren’t sure if any items were taken from the apartment.
Investigators are still trying to figure out the relationship between the apartment residents and the suspects, Paolino said.
The teenager will be identified at a later date by the Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office.
