Body pulled from Cherry Creek Reservoir was likely fisherman who fell through ice, police say

The body of a 65-year-old man who likely fell through the ice while ice fishing was pulled out of the Cherry Creek Reservoir on Tuesday afternoon, the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office said.

Two fishermen were at the spillway in Cherry Creek State Park at around 3:10 p.m. when they spotted a cooler floating in the water about 50 feet from shore and went to retrieve it, sheriff’s office spokesperson Ginger Delgado said.

The fishermen found a man’s body holding on to the cooler when they tried to pull it out of the water and called park rangers.

Ice fishing equipment was also found in the water near the man’s body, Delgado said.

It’s not clear how long the man was in the water and he has not been linked to any missing persons case, but the initial investigation does not show evidence of foul play, Delgado said.

The sheriff’s office is still investigating the death and the Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office is working to notify the man’s next of kin.

South Metro Fire Rescue dive crews searched the area for other bodies until sunset and did not locate anyone else, Delgado said.

Ice conditions at the park are “pretty dicey” after a recent warm weather spell, said Colorado Parks and Wildlife spokesperson Kara Van Hoose.

CPW recommends at least 4 inches of ice to safely ice fish, Van Hoose said. Anyone with questions about whether it’s safe to be on the ice can check the Cherry Creek State Park Facebook page, which is regularly updated with ice conditions. People can also call the park office at 303-690-1166 or ask a ranger.
