Border Czar Tom Homan Celebrates Historic Low Border Encounters

Trump administration border czar Tom Homan joined the Border Patrol in 1984 and can’t recall illegal crossings ever being as low as they are right now.

In March, Border Patrol encountered 7,181 illegal aliens at the southwest border, “a far cry from the more than 11,000 a day that we saw for a time period under [President Joe] Biden,” Homan said in an X post Tuesday.

“The men and women of the Border Patrol have proven what they can accomplish when they are allowed to do their job and complete the mission of their agency,” Homan continued. “The last administration had the Border Patrol releasing millions of illegal aliens into the United States, which caused more and more to come.”

More than 10 million illegal aliens entered the U.S. under the Biden administration, according to CBP data. December of 2023 saw the highest number of illegal crossings between ports of entry along the southern border at 249,740. Illegal alien encounters at the southern border have been trending downward since the end of 2024, falling from 47,322 in December to 29,101 in January, and down to 8,347 by February, according to CBP.

Homan thanked Trump for his “game changing policies” that he credits with the decline in illegal crossings, adding, “[t]hank you to the patriots of the Border Patrol who are making this country safe again!”

Since taking office on Jan. 20, Trump has reinstated the “Remain in Mexico” policy, which requires illegal aliens to wait in Mexico for an asylum hearing, ended “catch and release,” launched a mass-deportation effort focused on the arrest and removal of criminal illegal aliens, designated some criminal cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, and taken a slew of other pro-border security measures.

“Under President Donald Trump, our borders are more secure than ever in American history,” Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said in response to March’s the border crossing numbers.

Daily encounters of illegal aliens at the southwest border have declined to around 230 per day, “a number our country has never seen before — especially when measured against the previous administration’s average daily encounters of 5,100 per day,” according to a CBP press release.

CBP Acting Commissioner Pete Flores said that under the Trump administration, “Border Patrol agents are empowered like never before to shut down unlawful entry and protect American lives.”

“The message is clear,” Flores says, “the border is closed to illegal crossings, and for those still willing to test our resolve, know this — you will be prosecuted, and you will be deported.”
