Colorado road conditions: Multi-vehicle crash closes WB I-70 at Empire Junction, U.S. 6 in mountains for weather

A crash involving at least 8 vehicles closed westbound Interstate 70 from Empire Junction to Georgetown Monday morning.

Heavy snowfall in Colorado’s mountains and whiteout conditions fueled by strong winds also closed part of U.S. 6 on Monday, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.

Westbound I-70 was closed from Exit 232 for Empire Junction to Exit 228 for Georgetown and County Road 381, according to a 10:33 a.m. post on its X.com account. CDOT reported at least a 17-minute delay on its trip planner website.

The Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office said injuries in the crash had been reported, but it did not say what caused the crash. However, traffic cameras in the area showed falling snow.

U.S. 6 remains closed for “safety concerns” in both directions between mile marker 222 and Interstate 70, according to CDOT. The closure includes Loveland Pass.

Eastbound I-70 also had been closed Monday morning between Exit 203 for East Frisco and Exit 216 for U.S. 6 and Loveland Pass because of “adverse” weather conditions, CDOT officials said, but it had reopened as of 9:45 a.m.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
