A winter storm expected to hit southern Colorado on Wednesday could drop more than a foot of snow in the mountains and up to six inches in the southern metro area, according to the National Weather Service.

The storm will start Wednesday night and continue into Thursday evening, NWS forecasters said. The greatest impact will be along the southern and eastern mountains, including the I-25 corridor.

As of Tuesday morning, snow forecasts included:

  • Up to 2 inches in downtown Denver, Golden, Lakewood and at Denver International Airport
  • Up to 3 inches in Aurora, Centennial, Highlands Ranch and Littleton
  • Up to 6 inches in Castle Rock, Larkspur, Elizabeth and Parker
  • Up to 14 inches in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains, including Monarch Pass and Expectation Mountain
  • Up to 15 inches in southern Colorado’s San Juan Mountains, including Red Mountain Pass, Coal Bank Pass and Wolf Creek Pass
  • Up to 19 inches in central Colorado’s Columbus Basin
  • Up to 21 inches in Costilla County’s town of Blanca

NWS forecasters said the snowfall predictions aren’t set in stone because of uncertainty in the storm track and temperatures, but people should expect icy, snow-packed roads for the Thursday morning commute.

Areas in eastern Colorado that don’t see snow are likely to see rain Wednesday and Thursday, according to a NWS Hazardous Weather Outlook.
