Deputy, suspect injured in shooting at Fort Collins park

A Larimer County deputy and a man who shot at sheriff’s deputies were injured after a confrontation in a northeastern Fort Collins park on Monday.

Two deputies tried to stop a man riding an off-road motorcycle at around 2 p.m. near Edora Park, in the 1400 block of East Stuart Street, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

The deputies believed the man was violating traffic laws and he did not stop when they tried to pull him over, instead driving on the bike path into the park. Deputies followed him on their motorcycles.

He got off of his motorcycle and “exchanged gunfire” with deputies, according to the sheriff’s office. The man fell to the ground and did not follow commands, so deputies used a K-9 to pull him away from the gun. He was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

One deputy was shot and is recovering at the hospital, sheriff’s officials said.

The shooting will be investigated by the Eighth Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team.

Anyone with information about the shooting who has not spoken to investigators should call Detective Hooper at 970-962-2032 or Crime Stoppers of Larimer County at 970-962-2032.
