Hurricane Beryl morphed Monday night into a powerful Category 5 hurricane, the earliest ever to reach that strength in the Atlantic.

The storm, fueled by record-warm waters, made landfall on Grenada’s Carriacou Island on Monday as Category 4 hurricane. From there, it strengthened as further as it continues churning west in the Caribbean.

Affected islands were assessing damage from the storm. St. Vincent and the Grenadines Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves said Monday that hundreds of homes had been severely damaged or destroyed, including on the main island of St. Vincent.
