With gas prices plummeting across the United States, the Trump administration is taking credit for Americans’ savings at the pump.
The White House’s “Rapid Response” team sent out a flurry of jubilant posts on X on Monday, celebrating the fourth consecutive week of falling gas prices.
But can Trump take credit?
Rep. Wesley Hunt, R-Texas, who represents a Houston, Texas-area district, thinks so.
“The drop in gas prices can be attributed to President Trump unleashing American energy, starting with reversing Biden-era restrictions on domestic oil and gas producers,” Hunt said in a statement to The Daily Signal.
He specified that he thinks “lifting drilling restrictions on federal lands,” as well as “expanded offshore drilling” and the “reinstatement of the Keystone XL pipeline” have helped to drive down gas prices.
Mario Loyola, a Heritage Foundation fellow focused on energy and environmental policy, contenss that Trump’s general pro-energy stance has given private energy producers the confidence to increase supply—driving down prices in turn.
In short, the mere expectation of consistent pro-energy policies can be enough to drive down prices.
“When you have an anti-energy policy like you had in the Biden administration … it chills production all across the economy for energy, starting with investment in future energy capacity. And as soon as you see investment in future energy capacity start to drop off, prices start to go up,” said Loyola.
“What you’re seeing here is the energy production in the United States responding to what is obviously a pro-energy policy in the Trump administration. And so, producers, investors feel confident adding capacity. They feel confident expanding production.”
Rep. August Pfluger, R-Texas, also mainly attributed the falling gas prices to Trump’s policies, saying in a statement to The Daily Signal, “While a multitude of factors can influence the price of gas, prices at the pump are falling as Republicans have been working alongside President Trump to cut burdensome regulations that have hindered the American energy industry, in order to unlock America’s vast energy potential.”
One of the most recent concrete examples of a pro-oil policy from the Trump administration was the Natural Gas Tax Repeal Act, a Congressional Review Act move introduced by Pfluger.
The resolution blocks the Environmental Protection Agency’s Biden-era taxes on methane emissions, as well as incentives for capping emissions.
Trump signed the resolution Monday in another clear signal of his desire to deregulate the natural gas industry.
Pfluger hopes this will help to ease prices further at the pump.
“My [Congressional Review Act] to repeal the natural gas tax is significant because it provides much-needed regulatory and tax relief to hardworking energy producers across the country,” he said.
“When you tax production, you tax consumers. Removing costly fees means Americans pay less for the energy they rely on every day,” the Texas lawmaker said.
