Meridian fire burning on 4,000 acres east of Colorado Springs destroys 1 building, threatens others

A fast-moving wildfire burning across 4,000 acres east of Colorado Springs has destroyed one structure and is threatening others, sheriff’s officials said.

Mandatory evacuations for the Meridian fire include Davis Road to the north, Enoch Road to east, Franceville Coal Mine Road to the west and the southern edge of Schriever Space Force Base, said Sgt. Kurt Smith with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.

The heart of the Meridian fire is burning near Drennan Road and South Meridian Road and moving north toward Colorado 94, Smith said.

That intersection is less than 9 miles east of the Colorado Springs Airport.

It’s not clear whether the fire has jumped the highway and there is no containment and no estimated time frame for containment, Smith said at a briefing just before 4 p.m.

“Right now we’re working on stopping the fire from moving and keeping structures that are threatened from catching fire,” he said.

No injuries have been reported and the cause of the fire is unknown.

Colorado 94 is closed in both directions between Marksheffel Road and Blaney Road, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.

A second fire near Garden of the Gods pulled Colorado Springs Fire Department crews from the Meridian fire, but firefighters are getting “a good knock down” on the second fire as of 3:42 p.m., the agency said in a post on X.
