Colorado Springs police fatally shot an armed man suspected of breaking into vehicles downtown Monday afternoon, officials said.

About 2:20 p.m., someone called 911 to report a man threatening someone with a gun and breaking into cars in a parking lot near Colorado Avenue and Tejon Street, the Colorado Springs Police Department said in a social media post.

Officers found the man inside a car and tried to take him into custody, police said. When the man got out of the car, police said he had a gun.

One officer fired at least one round and shot the man, police said, without disclosing how many shots were fired.

Police administered emergency aid, but the man died on the scene, the department said. The man has not yet been publicly identified.

No officers or bystanders were injured. Investigators found a gun on scene, according to police.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office will conduct an investigation into the shooting.
