President Donald Trump is pulling the nomination of Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., to be United Nations Ambassador.
The move is designed protect House Republicans’ slim majority, said Senate Foreign Relations Chairman Jim Risch.
While Stefanik would likely have no trouble getting the necessary votes for confirmation, Republicans hold a narrow majority in the House with 218 seats, while Democrats hold 213 seats. There are currently four vacant seats.
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, a Democrat, is expected to slow-walk the special election to replace Stefanik.
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee advanced Stefanik’s nomination on Jan. 30.
