Two juveniles arrested after armed carjacking, shooting near Adams County school

Two juveniles were arrested Tuesday after an armed carjacking and shooting led to a bullet hitting a building on the Mapleton Public Schools Global campus in Adams County, sheriff’s officials said.

Deputies responded to the 7600 block of Navajo Street at around 1:05 p.m. for a carjacking and got a call about shots fired in the 7400 block of Broadway moments later, said Adams County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Adam Sherman. They found shell casings in the area and a bullet hole through the front door of the nearby Mapleton Arts Center.

Deputies later found that a truck matching the stolen vehicle’s description crashed into a parked car and two juveniles had run from the scene. One was arrested on the street and a second was seen running through backyards before entering a house, where deputies found him and two other juveniles as well as an 18-year-old.

Several of the people in the house were arrested on unrelated warrants, Sherman said.

No students were inside the arts center when a bullet passed through the building, said district spokesperson Sean Andersen-Vie. The center shares a campus with four schools and the district’s administration building.

No injuries were reported from the carjacking or school.
